My First Lessons In Real Estate

Team,

It took me about a year to sell my first home after I got my real estate license. I started working part time as an agent because I had a full time job at the airport, and I was a single parent. Shortly after 9/11 I was laid off because of all of the changes that the airlines were going through, so I made the decision to jump into real estate full time.

Although I worked full time as a Realtor for most of that first year, I didn’t sell a thing. I was doing everything I could to close a deal. I spoke to everyone that I knew about my business, I passed out business cards and flyers, I cold called, I did floor time, and anything else that I could think of to generate business. I was hungry.

The more I worked, I started to realize what the problem was; Poor leadership. I had two different brokers in my first year, both of which had no real interest in my goals or whether I failed or succeeded. They were simply focused on the money that they were making.

After realizing that leadership was an issue, I started focusing on become a leader myself. This was a huge challenge considering that I didn’t have a mentor, nor anyone to lead. So I decided to read everything that I could get my hands on; mind you… google didn’t exist at that time so my research consisted of going to the library, reading the real estate section of the newspaper, and talking to people who knew more than I did.

The following year I went on to sell about 50 homes, and my numbers got better each year afterwards. It was only until I started building a team that my numbers started to drop again. Despite the setback, I realized that in order to have the balance that I needed, I would have to build a team. Keeping in mind that I was a single parent, liked to workout, throw parties, and cook a couple meals each day!

Fast forward to today, and I am still on that same mission of balance. and having Peace of Mind in all that I do. I am still hungry, and I am still focused on my team. These communication pages are designed to provide you all with some of the things I WISHED I had when I got into the business. There are mentoring opportunities, referral opportunities, assistance opportunities and so much more that we’re offering. That’s what this team is about! We want to see you succeed, always keep that in mind.

See you at the top!

~Matthew
