The following is from the article: Asking For Help By John M. Grohol, Psy.D.
The most successful people I know are ones who know what they’re good at and then surround themselves with people who are good at everything else. They readily acknowledge when they don’t know something and instead of pretending they know it, they ask questions to try and educate themselves.
I think the number one reason why people don’t ask for help is simply fear. Fear that others will judge them for seeking help, fear that others will see them as weak or damaged. This fear is the same kind of fear that holds many people back in their lives.
One of the hardest things that I deal with as a team leader is people not wanting to ask for help. On one hand it’s easy to deal with because it means less work for me in that moment, however, down the road the help that wasn’t requested will usually come back to haunt me in some way.
Not asking for help means that something may not get done correctly, and most likely will have to be “fixed” at an inopportune time, and that’s never fun! What’s worse is the time we lose while trying to figure something out when we could have saved time by asking for help.
Yesterday I reached out to Nate for help; I’ve been dealing with a situation for a few days that I could have handled on my own. The problem is that it would have taken me too long to do so, it would have also created unnecessary stress, and as I think about it, I probably wouldn’t of gotten the results most beneficial for the entire team. The point is that I reached out for help.
Did I want to? Considering I knew how to handle the situation, of course not! The thing that made asking for help easy is the fact that Nate offered, and I took him up on that offer. Now we’re moving forward much faster and much better. The doors of our minds will open and reveal so much more when we ask for help.
We’re all here to help one another. Not one of us has it all together at all times, so we can expect to be a teacher at some point and a student at others. Always remember that sometimes the best students make the best teachers.
I challenge you all to ask at least 2 team members 3 different real estate related questions.
Here are my questions to the team…
What type of training would you like to receive more of?
Is there a subject that you feel comfortable teaching?
Is there anything that I can do to help you today?
