Apply for a specific position: Avoid application for a position without describing EXACTLY what particular position you seek. Never apply for “just a position.” That indicates you lack specialized qualifications.
Are you Passionately Qualified?
If you’re currently looking for a new career or a job, I strongly recommend that you check out pages 116-123 of the book Think and Grow Rich. It has several good tips to consider before applying for a new position. Number 5 was my favorite on page 118 is my favorite: Apply for a specific position
I understand that there are circumstances that we sometimes go through in which ANY job that pays us will do. However, the problem with applying for “any” job means that you’ll get just that: Any Job.
Unless a person is “behind the eight ball”, I don’t see the benefit of applying for just any position. I talk to a lot of people about employment on a regular basis, and it’s shocking to hear just how many people will say that they “don’t care” what they do as long as the job pays.
I’ve always cared too much about the type of work that I do; I know that if I’m not happy with the type of work that I’m doing then I’m not going to be able to keep that job long. I’m either going to quit or get fired.
As it relates to the Real Estate business, I’ve worked with a lot of newer agents over the years and I’ll give them a similar lesson when dealing with buyers. It’s like this, an agent that receives a call from a buyer or seller lead is basically receiving a “job offer” and the agent can decide to work with the lead or not.
A lot of agents think that they need to work with every lead that calls in. I used to be one of those agents, until buyers (and sellers) started running me ragged. So I had to Block Time in order to decide what type of leads I preferred to working with. I went from working with first time home buyers to not preferring to talk to any buyers directly; I prefer most of my conversations to be with agents or brokers.
The point is that I had to decide exactly what type of people I wanted to work with, and in my opinion, this process should be no different from any other employment opportunity. The challenging part for some will be finding out what they’re good at, that’s why it important to Block Time to determine what skills and PASSION you have that can add value to the job you’re seeking.
If you’re not happy with your career or are looking for new employment, Block some Time to check out pages 116-123 before you submit your next resume or application.
