Now that you have the information, would you please apply it?

In the professions of law, medicine, and education, a new brand of leadership, and to some extent, new leaders will become a necessity. This is especially true in the field of education. The leader in that field must, in the future, find ways and means of teaching people HOW TO APPLY the knowledge they receive in school. He must deal more with PRACTICE and less with THEORY.

I think there are several reasons why people have so many different licenses, degrees, certifications, and experience in multiple fields. One reason that the book gives is that; people simply don’t know how to apply what they’ve learned because very little focus is being put on “application”.... so after a few attempts in their new field, they’ll move on to something else if they haven’t easily mastered the old field.

Another reason that I feel people carry a lot of different certifications is due to a lack of passion in the areas that they’re going after. Although I’m only licensed in selling Real Estate, I have a lot of other skills that I’m great at, but coaching and consulting is what I’m most passionate about, and technically I don’t need a real estate license for that. In fact, at one point I was going to let my license lapse because I didn’t want to practice real estate “the traditional way” anymore.

I’m at a point where I’m considering whether or not I should get my broker’s license, however, I don’t have the passion for getting the license because I haven’t created a clear vision as to how I would marry the responsibility of being a broker with my consulting and coaching responsibilities. I have tons of ideas, but none that I am passionate about, so I’ll hold off until I can clearly “see it”.

We all have areas in which we’ve learned something and applied it well. I think that some of us need to slow it down when it comes to learning new skills, and start learning how to apply the ones that we already have. Either that or Block the Time to discover what we’re most passionate about and then learn everything we can in that area.
