Have you forgotten where you came from?

UNWILLINGNESS TO RENDER HUMBLE SERVICE. Truly great leaders are willing, when occasion demands, to perform any sort of labor which they would ask another to perform. “The greatest among ye shall be the servant of all” is a truth which all able leaders observe and respect.

Have you forgotten where you came from?

Have you ever watched the show Undercover Boss? It’s a pretty good show, to sum it up, a CEO of a big company will disguise himself or herself as an entry level employee. The objective is for the CEO to see how things really operate outside of “the corporate office”.

In most cases the CEO has a tough time adjusting to the “new” work environment, or they find out that equipment is in bad shape or simply not safe to be used, along with a number of other things. Either way, the CEO’s that appear on the show have agreed to humble themselves in order to help the company grow, and usually they’ll grow from the experience on a person level as well.

In my line of work, I spend equal time talking to Owners, CEO’s, and The Entry Level Team Members. And one of the hardest things to do is to get an Owner or CEO to understand some of problems that the team is going through. Some simply don’t care, while others simply can’t connect.

Take Time Blocking for instance, most CEO’s and Owners had to spend years Blocking Time to get where they’re at. Whether they chose to attend college for 2 or more years or whether they built the company on “trial and error”, it doesn’t matter… they still had to Block Time in order to make it happen.

So it amazes me to see Owners and CEO’s who are really passionate about the well being of the company and team fail to emphasize the importance of Time Blocking (and how to go about it) to their team. Mary Kay Ash made a whole lot of money, and she also made a positive impact on the lives of millions of women; she was a very humble woman according to what I’ve seen and read about her.

Mary Kay Ash would work directly with her team on all levels. She would also give her team “Time Blocking Tools” to help them balance out their days. And because the line of work was for women, her team consisted of mostly women. However, Mary Kay Ash Blocked Time to consider the husbands; she considered them in all areas which is why the company has continued to do well since 1963 and is ranked #133 on the Forbes 500 list.

Being humble at times is tough, but it helps us grow and it gives us strength. There are thousands of stories out there in which people either chose to humble themselves or had to humble themselves in order to take life to the next level. I am at a point in my life where I need to humble myself in a few areas, where are you at in your life?
