A moving train is making good time when the engineer spots a 3 foot wall across the track ahead. The train’s speed has been building for a while so the engineer presses forward and using its momentum smashes through the wall without missing a beat. A different train travels down another track only this one keeps slowing down and speeding up inconsistently. The engineer spots a 1 inch wall on the track ahead, and begins to worry about how they will get around it, and the train slows to a stop.
Each train faced an obstacle but the one traveling with momentum was able to blast through by leaning forward on its power. Momentum is the key to blast through most of the issues that pop up. When we have it, we keep chugging along, and when we don’t even the smallest problems seems insurmountable.
Right now our team is more like the second train in my analogy. We have power at our disposal and a long track ahead of us, but we need to build more momentum to blast through to the next level. Starting today there are a couple things we can do to help build up the Big Mo.
Communication
We can all do better with communicating with one another to make sure everyone is on the same page. We need to make sure we communicate with our clients to make sure they’re happy with the service that we work so hard to provide. The great part about having a team is you don’t have to do all of the follow up yourself, as long as you’ve communicated through updating notes and having conference calls. That way we can all pitch in to take up the slack.
Consistency
The second part of communication is consistently keeping the notes and your fellow team members updated. As we build more business, that means we have more people to keep track of and service. So without regular updates, folks can fall through the cracks and our business loses momentum.
Time Blocking
Time blocking is a powerful tool by which we dedicate a portion of time to one particular task. That means during our designated time blocks we may turn off phones, and shutdown email to simply focus on an issue until it's been addressed. We’re all given the same amount of time each day, and it's important how we choose to use it.
Faith
We need to have faith in ourselves and each other. Faith that we have the resources we need to handle anything that comes our way. Faith that our other team members can step up when needed and pitch in to make this train keep moving. Faith that we are on the right track.
Momentum is a powerful thing. It can make a weak organization appear twice as strong. Its can also hold back a strong organization if it's shown to be lacking. We’re strong, and we have momentum. We just need keep building more, and I for one am ready to go! Are you?
