Finding Joy

Team,

Two Questions: What brings you joy? Are you doing the things that bring you joy?

One thing that brings me joy is team building, and I've been doing a lot of it lately. Ever since middle school I've been the type of person that would assemble a group for something. Whether it was to play football, kickball, cut grass, ride bikes, etc, I just love putting together a team and even more so I love WINNING with the team that I put together.

On the flip side, being part of a dysfunctional team is a huge turn off for me. There's almost nothing worse than a team that can't get along and see eye to eye with one another. That type of situation is so draining.

I am happy to say that our current team brings me a lot of joy. Yesterday I had several calls with the team and each one was a pleasure. Despite being tired yesterday and having a lot to do, working with you all towards a common goal was very energizing and motivating.

Our clients are a part of our team as well, and sometimes they can be a "kill joy" if we allow it. As agents, we've all dealt with an unrealistic client. Whether it's the buyer that has a $50,000 approval and wants to look at $100,000 homes, or the seller that has done shoddy work to a property but wants top dollar for it. These situations can be soooo draining, would you agree?

Client situations like these remind me of one of my favorite books 'The 48 Laws of Power' by Robert Greene. Law #10 States....

Avoid The Unhappy and Unlucky. You can die from someone else's misery—emotional states are as infectious as diseases. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.

We've seen a lot of wealthy musicians, actors, and artists self destruct in the media. I used to wonder how could a person with so much money be so unhappy? Then I learned, it's not the money that makes people happy. Happiness comes from doing the things that bring you joy. This is something that I had to remind myself of this morning. I hope that you are doing more and more of the things that bring you joy because life is too short not to.

Make it a great day! ~Matthew
