Keeping It Light

For many years the sunrise has always held the promise of a glorious new day for me. I used to work at the airport, and each morning around 6:00a I would go outside to catch a few minutes of the sun climbing into the sky. As the the darkness of night slowly gives way to light, I allow myself to believe that anything is possible and the world is full of abundance.

It’s hard to keep a positive attitude when social media seems geared toward showing us the world’s darkest side. Without even realizing it we watch reality shows or new broadcasts that revel in showing us each other’s weakness as entertainment, and that takes a toll on our collective spirit. We need to balance the negative with something positive or we risk becoming hopelessly pessimistic.

As my own way to fight for balance I like to wake up and listen to a motivational speaker. Doesn’t matter what the person is talking about as long as they speak to that part of me that still believes that every day is a gift waiting to be opened. The key to this trick is to keep doing it, and not allow yourself to be talked out of hearing that uplifting message each morning. If you let it, negativity has a way of beating you down before you even realize it. So we must be vigilant in knowing that in our darkest times, there is always a sunrise ahead.
