SELFISHNESS. The leader who claims all the honor for the work of his followers, is sure to be met by resentment. The really great leader CLAIMS NONE OF THE HONORS. He is contented to see the honors, when there are any, go to his followers, because he knows that most men will work harder for commendation and recognition than they will for money alone.

As a business, it’s impossible to do anything amazing completely on your own. So being selfish (or stupid) is a bad way to attempt greatness. From the Article: Selfish Businesses Will Inevitably Fail


One of the things that I look for when working with others is their usage of the words “I” and “Me” when describing their business. The more that a person uses those words, the less they use the word “We”.


I hear a lot of people talk about how they had to do things on “their own”. I can be guilty of this bad habit at times, especially when describing my first couple of years in the real estate business or my years growing up as a teenager in the streets of Youngstown, Ohio. Although I may have felt alone sometimes, that wasn’t actually the case.


Fact of the matter is that in most cases, there’s always someone there supporting and helping us. It might not be the type of help or support that we “think” want or “need”, but that doesn’t mean that we’re doing it alone. Thus we should be willing to give credit when credit is due because everyone loves to receive accolades; in some cases praise given at the right time is more valuable than money.


Money pays the bills, but accolades pay into a person’s self esteem. Receiving honors gives us the energy to keep on going! Lately I’ve been making it a point to highlight the strengths and accomplishments of my Team Members FIRST before offering constructive criticism.


This can be tough especially during the “thick of the day”, however, I know that Blocking Time and giving honors and respect to my Team is one of the most important things that I can do for our continued growth.
