How Much Education Do You Need in Order to Sell a Lot of Real Estate?

According to the State of Michigan, in order to sell as much real estate as you want (as a licensed Realtor), you must have 40 hours of education, and pass the state exam. Once you do that, you’re free to sell real estate as you as long as you follow some minor rules. As a non-licensed individual, you can sell as much of your own real estate holdings as you want as long as some minor rules are followed too.
So why is it that more people in the real estate business aren’t selling 100’s of houses each year? According to the statistics, the average realtor sells 6-10 properties per year. That’s pretty bad, how can this be? With as many people wanting to buy a home to live in, why is the average realtor only selling 6-10 properties per year?
Another shocking statistic is that 7 out of 10 businesses (in general) fail; most within the first 5 years. How much education do business owners need in order to be one of the 3 out of 10 that make it? Do you know anyone that has started a business that didn’t make it? Where do rate between being a below average Realtor and an above average one?
Personally I don’t think it’s the amount of education that’s important, I think it’s the amount of passion that we have that’s important. I think realtors and business owners fail because they simply aren’t passionate enough about their businesses.
If you aren’t selling the amount of homes that you want to sell, you might want to look at the reasons why. What’s driving you? If you are a business owner and you’re business isn’t doing well, you may want to look at the reasons you started your own business. What’s driving you?
Are you driven by money? I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago about the reasons people quit their jobs, and according to the statistics, money wasn’t high on the list. So although we tend to think making a lot of money is important (and it is), it’s just not as important as we tend to make it out to be.
In my opinion being at peace is more important than being rich. I think one of the reasons that businesses and realtors fail is because peace of mind isn’t their number one goal. If you’re not working towards peace, what are you working on? At the end of the day, I think that if peace of mind is our number one objective we can’t go wrong. I think that some of our goals would be a little different if peace of mind was our number one objective.
I challenge you to think about your number one objectives. Is it to become rich? Be happier? Be at peace? Have more fun? Leave a legacy behind? Also think about what you’d be willing to give up for more money, more peace, more happiness, etc. I don’t think any successful person ever reached the point of being 100% satisfied. I think that life is really about constantly improving ourselves while striving to be happy in the process.
Make today a great day folks, and think about how much you need to be happy. And ask yourselves: Would you rather work with a bunch of rich folks or a bunch of happy folks? My personal goal is to work with a lot of happy rich folks, ya dig? Are you willing to help me reach my goal?
