I had a broker that would always say: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there”. When he said this, he’d always be referring to buyers. His point was that if a buyer doesn’t know what they want, then it didn’t matter how many houses that I showed them, they’re weren’t going to make an offer, because they didn’t know what they wanted.

A buyer can be pre-approved, they can be on time for every showing, they can return every one of your calls and respond to every email. But if they don’t know what they want, then they are not going to make an offer.

We can all be vague about some of our goals. After reading this chapter I realized how vague Scott and I were about our goal of working with 10 agents. We never described the niche of each agent we’re looking to work with, so in essence, we were no better than the buyer that didn’t know exactly what they wanted.

Don’t get me wrong, we covered the bases as far as personality, work ethic, background, etc that we wanted in our team members. And we got it, actually we got more than what we expected so I can say without a doubt that applying specific details to your goals will definitely lead to the results that you set out for yourself.

Not having specific and detailed goals is like going to KFC and telling the cashier that you want some chicken. Imagine how that conversation would go.

  • Cashier: Hi, welcome to KFC can I take your order?

  • Me: Yes, I want some chicken. And could you hurry, I’m in a rush.

  • Cashier: No problem sir, what can I get for you?

  • Me: I don’t know, just give me some chicken. I want a lot of it too. I got three people to feed so make sure to give me enough.

  • Cashier: Ok… So you want a 12 piece Original recipe?

  • Me: I told you I want chicken, enough to feed 3 people!

  • Cashier: Ok. You have a 16 piece of dark original meal, that’ll be $34.97.

  • Me: We don’t want dark meat, and 16 pieces is too much, because I’m on a diet.

  • Cashier: Sir, please step to the side and review the menu and then let me know when you’re ready to order. Next!

When you think about this example, it’s clear that being specific is crucial to reaching our goals. Because if we’re not specific about our desires, then we may end up getting exactly what we ask for versus what we actually want. Hence the old saying: “Be Careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

This chapter describes how to get extraordinary results. It suggests living with purpose. If someone walks into a fast food restaurant to order, they stand a better chance of getting great results if they go in knowing exactly what they want. The same goes for all other areas of life. We simply need to be more specific about our goals if we want to achieve extraordinary results.

Until next time, MAKE it a great day!!
