Warning, Slow Down Ahead

With the rewards of having patience being so high, I’m not sure why we tend to allow ourselves to become so impatient as often as we do. When we’re going after our goals, we need to go after them with full determination and excitement...however let us still be wise enough to slow it down when we see the warning signs ahead.

It’s like driving a car from Point A to Point B, when traveling from A to B we may experience something like heavy traffic or bad road conditions. Experienced drivers know the value of slowing it down and remaining patient. On the other side of the coin, we’ll see drivers that will do 75MPH in a 70MPH Zone during a heavy downpour.

These extreme traffic conditions are easy to recognize, and thus are easier for us to make adjustments to our driving. However, when conversing with people, there may be warning signs and signals that will tell us to “slow it down”, which are not as obvious. We may ignore these signs for many reasons; we can be angry, excited, sad, or sometimes we simply don’t even recognize them. Either way, we tend to lose out when we let our impatience get the best of us.

I have tons of stories in which I allowed a lack of patience to get the best of me. When this happens in our personal lives we can damage or destroy relationships, and in business we can kill a deal and lose future income.

One thing that we can do to help become more patient is to remind ourselves of the value of the situation before we “go off”. For instance, if we’re working with a buyer that’s being a little difficult, we can simply remind ourselves that this is a Ready, Able, and Willing Buyer approved for $200,000, and WHEN we close this deal, our team will make 6% of $200,000. That’s $12,000! Wooooosaaaah…..

At the end of the day, there’s a time for everything, there’s a time to be patient and there’s a time to “go off.” We all face these decisions every day, the key is to recognize the signals so that we know what time it is. Do you know what time it is?
