Do I Need a Buyer's Agent to Purchase Real Estate?

Do I need a buyer's agent to purchase real estate?

Before I go into the answer, let's talk about what a buyer's agent is. In short, a buyer's agent is a licensed real estate salesperson that guides and councils you throughout your home buying process.

Here are some of the things that a buyer's agent can do for you....

  • Provide you with lending information and resources.

  • Provide you with a list of properties that may be on or off of the MLS (Multi-Listing Service).

  • Schedule appointments for you to preview properties.

  • Submit an offer to purchase on your behalf.

  • Negotiate the offer on your behalf.

  • Orchestrate the closing process.

  • Attend closing; answer/address any questions that you may have.

There are other services that most buyer agents provide, however, these are the most common services. Every buyer's agent is different, meaning that some agents will offer more services than others. Some agents have a team, and some don't. Some agents specialize in certain areas, like working with investors for example.

Now that you have an idea of what a buyer's agent is, let's go back to the question...

Do I need a buyer's agent to purchase real estate? The answer is No. But having an experienced agent with a good team makes the buying process productive, efficient, less stressful, and enjoyable!

If you don't have a lot of real estate knowledge and you're purchasing your first home, I wouldn't recommend trying to purchase without a licensed salesperson or a mentor to help guide you through the process.

Monique Carter is a phenomenal buyer's agent that we had the pleasure of working with some years ago. Here's footage of her speaking at a home-buyer education course hosted by ABAYOMI of Detroit. Enjoy the video!
