Start Thy Purse to Fattening

"A part of all you earn is yours to keep. It should be not less than a tenth no

matter how little you earn." ~George S. Clason

Check out the following excerpt....

"I advise that you take the wisdom of Algamish and say to yourselves, 'A part of all I earn is mine to keep.'

Say it in the morning when you first arise. Say it at noon. Say it at night. Say it each hour of every day. Say it to yourself until the words stand out like letters of fire across the sky.

Impress yourself with the idea. Fill yourself with the thought. Then take whatever portion seems wise. Let it be not less than one-tenth and lay it by.

Arrange your other expenditures to do this if necessary. But lay by that portion first. Soon you will realize what a rich feeling it is to own a treasure upon which you alone have claim. As it grows it will stimulate you.

A new joy of life will thrill you. Greater efforts will come to you to earn more. For of your increased earnings, will not the same percentage be also yours to keep?”

Nowadays, so many of us will work very hard to "make" the money, but we won't work as hard to "save" it. We have no problem applying for higher paying jobs, we go out and get extra degrees, certifications, and so on.

We'll work seven days a week, sometimes 12+ hours a day, in an effort to get "caught up" with our finances. Some people gamble, rob, steal, sell their bodies, and more just to make ends meet.

Why do the majority of us go through such extremes to get "caught up"? In short, I think the answer is simple: For some, we don't know any better, and for others, we're too lazy to apply what we know.

Laziness is definitely a big problem with many people. However, I think for most honest, hard working folks we simply weren't taught how to make money work for us. Most of us are taught to finish school with good grades, go to college or learn a trade, then go out and get a good job and life will be great.

How's that concept been working out for America?

The financial lessons taught in The richest man in Babylon are simple and can be used by any of us at any stage of our lives. Although the lessons in the book are simple, the hardest part is changing the way we subconsciously think about making and saving money.

If we're not where we want to be financially, we should acknowledge that we're either lazy, or we've spent too much time trying to execute poor advice and lessons that we were taught along the way. We must also believe that it is possible for us to earn more and save more regardless of where we are at in our lives.

Another good step would be to read “The Richest Man in Babylon”, or listen to the audiobook. Should you decide to do so, please let us know what you think by leaving a comment below. Or if you are on the right financial track, we want to hear from you as well.

What advice would you give to those that are looking to obtain financial freedom?
