Jill Christina Vest unveiled her West Oakland Mural Project on June 16, 2021. The mural (and museum) celebrates The Women of the Black Panther party.
I first heard about Vest’s story last night while watching PBS news hour, and I must admit, they did a great job telling the story…not only about her mission to preserve this important piece of history, but also about the history itself.
I learned that 70% of the Black Panther party were women, and that most of them were the actual leaders and organizers within the organization. I also learned that their average ages were between 18 and 19 years old.
PBS News Hour did such a great job on this story that I will say no more other than check it out and that This has been a #TeamWoods moment in Black History.
