What’s your favorite Teena Marie song?

Teena Marie brilliantly fooled the Black community in 1979 when she released her debut Album Wild & Peaceful; her soulful voice had us thinking that she was Blackity Black while all the time she was Lily White y’all.

Lady T, as she was often called, was signed to Motown Records; Rick James was her producer (he turned down producing a Diana Ross album in order to produce Wild and Peaceful). So not only did she have a soulful voice, she had a soulful label and producer.

Here’s where the plot thickens, a photograph of Lady T did not appear on the Album cover. Her team was smart, they knew how judgemental Black folks can be when it comes to our music, so they purposely left her off of the cover.

The plan worked, and I’m so glad that it did! Teena Marie is definitely one of my favorite singers of all time. I made a lot of good memories with her music in the background, from my parties, BBQ’s, cleaning the house, to spittin’ that game…Teena has been there for me.

I’m struggling to keep this write up brief because there’s so much that I can say about the power of her music. So with that I’ll simply say thank you Lady T, thank you for fooling us.

FYI, did you know that she had a role on The Beverly Hillbillies?

The End.

This has been a #TeamWoods moment in Black History.
