On October 20, 2018 I spent the afternoon touring Oak Hill Cemetery, the tour was sponsored by the Youngstown Public library.
I’ve always been impressed with how the cemetery was designed on a steep hill (Oak Hill) with all of the unique grave markers. I’d been planning to take a ride through and check out some of the grave markers with my dog (he loves running through cemeteries).
So I decided to make it happen mid summer 2018 and I was really impressed with what I was able to see close up. After my ride went online to find out more information about the cemetery’s history. I didn't find a lot of information online, which was sort of a surprise.
I did find a video of a group tour of the cemetery (I thought that I was the only person who’d interested in touring a cemetery)! I couldn’t find any future tours scheduled that day, but a couple of months later I found scheduled tour while on the Youngstown Library’s website looking up something unrelated.
There was a tour was scheduled for that same day so I decided to go, I almost changed my mind because it was going to rain that day, plus Jax my dog cut his paw on a run that morning. I decided to go anyway; glad that I did because it was a really nice tour.
The guide (Tim) did a great job! The focal point of the tour was the burial sites belonging to the founders of the Youngstown Public Library. Tim shared some really good stories about the founder’s passion for educating the citizens of Youngstown and had a nice informative handouts for everyone. Tim also had donuts and apple cider for everyone afterwards!
If you get the opportunity to take a tour of the cemetery I recommend that you do, especially if Tim is the guide. You can go onto the Library’s website to see future scheduled events, tours, etc….
Check out video from the tour!
Check out me and Jax on our bike-run!
