Music can build us up and music can break us down.
Back in the day, empowering songs were played on the radio back to back to back to mutha-luvin back.
One of those empowering songs was "Yes We Can Can" by The Pointer Sisters. The song opens up with lyrics like...
Now's the time for all good men
To get together with one another.
We got to iron out our problems
And iron out our quarrels
And try to live as brothers.
They go on to drop so much more motivation and inspiration throughout the song. Lyrics like that had you feeling compelled to do something with yo life.
Fast forward to today, ladies are opening up their songs with lyrics like....
Drinking Henny out the bottle, let's get ratchet
Shake that ass for a shot, get it clapping
Pop that pussy for my nigga, don't be acting
Let's get ratchet, let's get ratchet, let's get ratchet, ayy
And...
Got ah new heater with ah new whip, bitch I'm stompin' the gas
Hop out ah push a start, and I'm activated and I'm turnt ta the max
Throw it back she breakin' her back, grown knees like Megan Thee Stall
Prez just upped another twenty, you know I'm doublin' that
Try listening to that back to mutha-luvin back. Don't get me wrong, I love some good ole vulgar music that has been stewed to perfection, but a lot of the music that gets the most radio play today has little to no uplifting qualities.
